This collaboration supports India’s self-reliance in railway technologies and enhances local manufacturing capabilities.
Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd has entered into an agreement with ABB India Limited to deliver propulsion systems for 25kV driverless metro projects in India. The agreement encompasses the transfer of technology for the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) and the manufacturing of converters and traction motors. This initiative aligns with the Make in India policy of the Government of India.
The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. However, the collaboration involves significant technology transfer and manufacturing commitments. ABB India will support the design, manufacture, supply, testing, installation supervision, and commissioning of propulsion systems. The agreement also includes a gradual transfer of manufacturing and co-production of converters and traction motors for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The scope of the agreement includes the delivery of 240 metro coaches, comprising 132 cars for Line 5 and 108 cars for Line 6 of Mumbai’s metro system. Line 5 covers a distance of 24.52 km with 17 stations, while Line 6 spans 15.60 km with 13 stations. Titagarh will also provide five years of maintenance following a two-year Defect Liability Period (DLP). The propulsion systems, including TCMS, are critical components responsible for controlling and monitoring train operations.
This collaboration is part of Titagarh’s strategy to enhance its capabilities in the railway sector. The company has already acquired technology for TCMS for 750V metro systems and established a TCMS laboratory in Bangalore. Titagarh is also producing traction motors for locomotives and EMUs and has developed traction converters for EMUs under a previous agreement with ABB. The current agreement further strengthens Titagarh’s position in the metro propulsion market.
The agreement was signed on January 27, 2026, marking a significant milestone in Titagarh’s efforts to support India’s self-reliance in high-value railway technologies. The collaboration aims to increase local content and support upcoming metro and rail projects in India and abroad. The project is expected to enhance Titagarh’s role as a comprehensive railway rolling stock producer in India.
