Tata Power Commissions 400 kV Transmission Line for 1000 MW Hydropower
Filing Summary
Tata Power Company Ltd has commissioned the 400 kV Koteshwar-Rishikesh transmission line, facilitating the evacuation of 1000 MW of hydropower from the Tehri-Koteshwar complex in Uttarakhand. This project, executed under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Limited, enhances power distribution across six northern states and three union territories. The transmission line, constructed over challenging Himalayan terrain, was completed within a year. This development marks the third major milestone under the NRSS project, contributing to Tata Power’s operational transmission line network of 7083 circuit kilometers across India.
Tata Power Company Ltd has announced the commissioning of the 400 kV Koteshwar-Rishikesh transmission line. This infrastructure enables the evacuation of 1000 MW of hydropower from the Tehri-Koteshwar generation complex located in Uttarakhand. The transmission line serves multiple northern states and union territories, including Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.
The project was executed under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Limited, a venture acquired by Resurgent Power Ventures Pte Limited. Resurgent Power is a joint venture promoted by Tata Power, ICICI Bank Limited, and other global investors. The new transmission line is a critical link in the northern power corridor, enhancing regional energy security and grid reliability.
The scope of the project involved constructing the transmission line across challenging Himalayan terrain in New Tehri and Dehradun districts. The line reaches altitudes exceeding 1816 meters above sea level. The construction required transporting materials through head-loading in remote mountainous regions and adhering to strict environmental norms in forested zones. Despite these challenges, the project was completed by over 500 skilled personnel within a year, following land clearance for 103 hectares.
This transmission line represents the third major commissioning milestone under the NRSS project. Previous elements include the 400 kV LILO Sikar-Neemrana Double Circuit line and the 400 kV LILO Babai-Bhiwani Double Circuit line. With the addition of the Koteshwar-Rishikesh line, Tata Power now has 7083 circuit kilometers of transmission lines operational or under execution across India.
The project commenced in November 2024 and was completed by December 2025. The successful, on-time commissioning of the transmission line demonstrates Tata Power’s capabilities in executing complex infrastructure projects with precision and adherence to safety and environmental standards.
