This project is a joint venture between NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49%). The unit was synchronized with the 765 kV grid on July 20, 2025, following the completion of the steam blowing milestone. The 72-hour full-load trial operation was completed successfully, leading to the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD).

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, with a total planned capacity of 1,980 MW, is expected to generate 14,743.08 MUs annually upon completion. The project aims to meet the energy requirements of approximately 12 million average Indian households. The power generated is primarily allocated to the State of Uttar Pradesh, with 93.11% of the output designated for the region. The remaining power is distributed to various states, promoting inter-state energy equity.

The project incorporates advanced technologies such as supercritical boiler and turbine-generator sets, Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and Zero Liquid Discharge systems to meet environmental standards. The Ghatampur project has also created significant employment opportunities, with over 4,000 contract workers currently engaged. Upon full commissioning, direct and indirect employment is expected to reach around 25,000 positions, contributing to the economic growth of Uttar Pradesh.

Unit-1 of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant commenced commercial operation on December 12, 2024, and has generated 4,449.84 MUs of electricity, resulting in revenue of INR 2,639 crore. The project is on track to complete the third and final unit in FY 2025-26. The power plant is supported by the development of the Pachwara South Open Cast Project in Jharkhand, which will provide a sustainable fuel source, with coal production anticipated to start in FY 2025-26.

The project is a strategic asset for energy security and regional growth, as highlighted by the Honourable Union Minister for Coal.
