Allied Blenders and Distillers sought the cancellation of John Distilleries’ trademark “Original Choice,” while John Distilleries sought the cancellation of Allied Blenders and Distillers’ trademark “Officer’s Choice.” The Madras High Court had previously ruled in favor of Allied Blenders and Distillers, allowing their writ petition and dismissing the one filed by John Distilleries.

The Supreme Court’s order, dated November 17, 2025, outlines the mediation process. Both parties have agreed to engage in this process. The court has emphasized the urgency of the matter and requested the mediator to prioritize the settlement process. The parties are directed to contact the mediator to schedule preliminary discussions within the week.

The next hearing in this case is set for December 8, 2025. The Supreme Court has instructed that the mediator’s honorarium be shared equally by both parties. This development follows the Supreme Court’s review of the Madras High Court’s judgment, which had set aside the Intellectual Property Appellate Board’s decision from March 8, 2013.
