BHEL Begins Supply of Traction Transformers for Vande Bharat Project
Filing Summary
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commenced the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. This initiative is part of a consortium led by BHEL with TRSL. The first set of transformers was dispatched from BHEL’s Jhansi plant. The project aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. BHEL’s Bhopal unit has also developed traction motors for the project. Additionally, BHEL-Jhansi has received an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles, further expanding its role in railway infrastructure.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has started supplying semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. This supply is part of a project executed by a consortium led by BHEL with TRSL. The initial set of transformers was dispatched from BHEL’s Jhansi plant on January 15, 2026.
A flag-off ceremony was conducted at the Jhansi plant, where Ms. Bani Varma, Director (IS&P), and Shri S. M. Ramanathan, Director (E, R&D) of BHEL, virtually flagged off the first set of transformers. Previously, traction converters for the same project were dispatched from BHEL’s Bengaluru plant. The transformers are being sent to Kolkata for the final assembly of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains.
The traction transformers are designed for operational speeds of up to 160 kmph and a design speed of 180 kmph. In addition to the transformers, BHEL’s Bhopal unit has developed and manufactured traction motors for the project. This development marks BHEL’s strategic entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment.
BHEL-Jhansi has also secured an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMV), which are specialized railway vehicles used for track maintenance. This order is part of the specialized rolling stock segment and aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. The RBMVs will be manufactured domestically at the Jhansi plant, contributing to indigenization and self-reliance in railway track maintenance technologies.
BHEL is a leading manufacturing enterprise in the energy and infrastructure sectors, providing indigenous solutions in power, transmission, transportation, defense, and industry segments. By indigenizing complex technologies for locomotives and distributed power trains, BHEL continues to support India’s journey towards self-reliance in the transportation and rolling stock sectors.
